Jake Oettinger nearly stole the 2022 first-round playoff series against the Calgary Flames with his excellent goalie, but the Dallas Stars don’t want to overreact to a series and give him a big payday.
The above storyline led Oettinger and the Stars to a stalemate.
Saad Yousuf from Athleticism reports that the big issue between Oettinger and Dallas is his perceived market value and, with training camp about a month away, where things go from here.
According to NHL trade rumors, Oettinger’s camp is seeking a salary of $4-5 million a year. The Stars have over $11 million in cap space, but they also have forward Jason Robertson to sign and he’ll command a big payday.
Yousuf went on to say in his post that Stars management wanted to slow things down and offer him a stint contract and in a few years, if his play is exceptional, he would get his big payday.
It will be interesting to see what happens with Robertson and Oettinger.
With Tyler Seguin and Jamie Benn earning a combined salary of $19 million a year, that’s not helping the Stars’ cap situation and signing the team‘s young stars.
